Are There Problems at Nursing Homes in Greenbrier County, WV? - Greenbrier Manor, the Brier, White Sulpher Springs Center and Heartland of Rainelle

Perhaps you are not familiar with the Nursing Home Compare website administered by CMS at Medicare.gov. Nursing Home Compare is designed to allow the public to understand certain information about nursing homes so consumers can make wise choices when deciding where they may want to put a loved one who needs rehabilitation or long term care services. While the information contained on Nursing Home Compare is not perfect (see our previous post regarding some facilities intentionally misleading the public using the website), it is a great tool to allow you to see a snapshot of a facility’s staffing, health inspections, and quality measures. This information is available at http://www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/search.html.

In and around Lewisburg, WV, White Sulpher Springs, WV, Ronceverte, WV and Rainelle, WV (Greenbrier County), there are four facilities with at least 50 certified beds with problematic statistics according to the CMS website. This article is designed to summarize important information about each of these four facilities:

GREENBRIER MANOR – Lewisburg, WV

Greenbrier Manor in Lewisburg is a 100 bed facility. The overall rating for Greenbrier Manor is only one star (much below average). Likewise, the staffing score for Greenbrier Manor is only one star (much below average). That means there are less caregivers to provide the needed care and treatments for each resident. The staffing data shows that Greenbrier Manor has less RNs, less LPNs, and less CNAs per resident than average facilities in West Virginia and across the United States. With less staff members to provide care, the residents are provided less hands-on care, which increases their chances of developing bed sores (also called pressure sores, pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers). The most recent annual inspection conducted by the WV Office of Facility Licensure and Certification (OHFLAC) found various significant problems, including the failure to write and use policies that forbid mistreatment, neglect and abuse of residents and theft of residents’ property.

The Brier in Ronceverte is a 90 bed facility. The overall rating for The Brier is only one star (much below average). Likewise, the health inspection score for The Brier is only one star (much below average). Without enough nurses to provide care, the residents are provided less hands-on care, which increases their chances of developing bed sores (also called pressure sores, pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers).

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS CENTER – White Sulphur Springs, WV

White Sulphur Springs Center is a 60 bed facility owned by Genesis Healthcare. The overall rating for White Sulphur Springs Center is only two stars (below average). Further, the most recent quality measures indicate that far more long stay residents suffer one or more falls with major injury, more long-stay residents suffer from urinary tract infections, and approximately double the number of bed sores (also called pressure sores, pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers) are present on patients at
White Sulphur Springs Center than at the average West Virginia or national nursing home.
